North Texas jazz fans and artists will celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month this year with a number of events, highlighted by a free concert and open house.

The event will feature:

  • Music by several jazz groups including the Sammons Jazz Ensemble led by James Gilyard, the Isabel Crespo Quartet from the University of North Texas and the GDYO Jazz Institute Combo.
  • A complimentary tasting of craft beers from the award-winning North Coast Brewing Co.
  • Free jazz CDs.
  • Free posters, including the special Great Day in Dallas poster signed by photographer Jesse Hornbuckle.
  • D’JAM Jazz Legends Awards presentation in four categories — Artist, Educator, Supporter and Innovator.

Jazz Appreciation Month has been sponsored each April by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History since 2004 to draw public attention to the glories of American Jazz as both an historical and living treasure. In honor of this important national initiative, a number of jazz presenters, jazz educators and jazz supporters in Dallas created D’JAM or Dallas Jazz Appreciation Month, to coordinate a series of events showcasing jazz in the greater Dallas community. This volunteer consortium includes nonprofit arts groups, universities, festivals, schools, cultural centers, jazz clubs and churches.
