PDNB Gallery presents "Flora"

In conjunction with the solo exhibitions for John Albok and John Herrin, PDNB Gallery presents "Flora," a group exhibition that surveys artists who utilize photography and its diverse alternative photographic processes as a means of observing and connecting with nature, exploring the dialogue between visual art and science.

A leading figure in early 20th Century photography, Karl Blossfeldt’s seminal work, reveals the artist’s intrigue with the unique and remarkable designs of nature through his masterful use of macro photography. Blossfeldt’s marvelous magnified portraits of plants, flowers and seed capsules, were often used as a guide of botanical and architectural studies. Exquisite photogravures from Blossfeldt’s groundbreaking monographs, Urformen der Kunst, and Wunder in Der Natur, will be featured in this contemplative exhibition.

A keen observer of the environment, Austin-based photographer David Johndrow unearths the grander than life beauty of his own garden. Johndrow gently addresses the juxtaposition of resilience and the fragility of nature.

"Flora" will also include a series of anonymous cyanotype photograms from the 1940s, influenced by Blossfeldt’s typologies and undoubtedly in the manner of the 19th Century British photographer and botanist, Anna Atkins.
