Chicken Scratch and next-door bar The Foundry get buzz for being a hip, family-friendly place to hang outdoors, eat scratch-made food, and listen to live music. Chicken is fried in a cast-iron skillet or wood-fired in a rotisserie that anchors — and therefore heats up — the dining room. Home-style sides include standards such as as mashed potatoes and gravy; we also dig the assortment at the soda fountain. Tim Byres, Christopher Jeffers, and Chris Zielke, co-owners of Smoke and BarBelmont, built this place on the property formerly occupied by Jack’s Backyard.
