Southern Methodist University
SMU
Southern Methodist University is known for educating many of Dallas' richest residents. The private university opened its doors in 1915, and each year it is home to about 11,000 students. Although it was founded by the United Methodist Church, SMU no longer has a religious affiliation. Most of the nation is familiar with Southern Methodist University because of a scandal with the football program that led to it receiving the so-called "death penalty," which canceled the 1987 season. SMU is home to McFarlin Auditorium, host of assorted live music, performing arts and literary events, as well as the Meadows Museum, which houses the finest collection of Spanish art outside of Spain.
