Traffic Woes

This Dallas freeway shutdown is, like, the biggest so far

Thanks to the ongoing Dallas Horseshoe Project, we've seen freeway closures before — several in fact — but in the grand scheme of freeway closures, this one's a biggie: There'll be a full closure of I-35E southbound on Friday, June 24.

Said closure will commence at 10 pm and will last all night. All lanes of southbound I-35E at I-30 will be closed, including the southbound I-35E exit to I-30 eastbound.

For those headed to Fort Worth, the news is better: The southbound I-35E exit to I-30 westbound will remain open.

Where this will hit hard is on Woodall Rodgers Freeway and I-345. All traffic heading south on I-35 will be directed to take Woodall Rodgers to I-345 to I-30 west, and back to I-35E south.

It'll be one giant loop of traffic, and a burden for anyone heading in or out of downtown Friday night.

Past closures such as the ramp shutdowns in May pale in comparison. That Dallas North Tollway closure that occurred just last week now seems laughably piddly, in retrospect. How silly we were.

This is all part of the Dallas Horseshoe Project, TxDOT's ongoing roadway construction to improve traffic flow through the heart of downtown Dallas. The project started in April 2013 and is scheduled for completion in summer 2017.
