Three months after being named interim editor in chief, Brian D. Sweany takes his permanent place on the Texas Monthly masthead. Sweany, who took over for former editor Jake Silverstein in April, is only the fifth person to helm the publication.
"I am honored to be named the editor in chief of Texas Monthly, where I first fell in love with magazine journalism," Sweany said in a release. "Our commitment to covering all aspects of life in Texas remains at the core of our mission, and the future holds exciting opportunities for us in the realms of digital journalism and live events."
A native Texan, Sweany first started at the Austin-based publication in 1996, as an intern. He grew up in Plano and received a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of North Texas and a master's degree in English literature from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Silverstein took to Twitter to congratulate Sweany — and share an interesting fact about his successor.
Also, first native Texan to hold the job since Broyles. Me, @evanasmith, and Greg Curtis born elsewhere, got there quick as we could, etc.
