Dallas' Truck Yard suffers another ice cream stand loss
The Truck Yard, the outdoor food truck complex off Greenville Avenue, has suffered another loss in the world of ice cream: Motor Sisters, the ice cream and milkshake food truck from the owners of Melt Ice Creams in Fort Worth, has packed its bags and taken its milkshakes back to Tarrant County.
The Motor Sisters' lease was up and a spokesperson for Melt confirmed that the truck closed in March, saying, "We wanted to concentrate on the store in Fort Worth."
Motor Sisters opened in late 2015 as a replacement for the prior ice cream vendor, the ill-fated Carnival Barker. Motor Sisters had a twist in that it was soft-serve ice cream, rather than the pre-made cups of horrid, melted-and-refrozen overly crystalized scoops served in an irritable manner by the inhospitable staff at Carnival Barker.
In addition to soft-serve cones coated with crunchy toppings, Motor Sisters also served overpriced $6 milkshakes. Everything had clever literary and women-themed names such as Amelia Earhart, which was surely worth the extra charge.
Ice cream is not an easy business in Dallas, but Truck Yard spokesperson Amanda Boso says that they still want ice cream in the space, and plan to take over operation of the ice cream stand in-house, with a more simplified concept that serves pre-made frozen confections.
"We have the stand painted to look like an actual ice cream truck, and the walk-up window looks like the window of an ice cream truck hanging out," she says. "The idea is that you're walking up to an old-fashioned ice cream truck, where you can get old-school treats like rainbow pops and ice cream sandwiches. We're just going for the nostalgia."
