The first branch of Banh Shop, the Vietnamese sandwich concept being tested by Yum Brands, will open at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, specifically at Terminal D. According to a staffer with the airport's concessions department, the sandwich shop will open at Gate 31, "in late July."

Banh Shop will specialize in banh mi sandwiches, featuring meats such as pork and beef, combined with pickled vegetables on a crisp baguette. Banh mi have become one of the hottest items on menus across the country.

The Banh Shop concept follows Super Chix, a chicken tenders sandwich restaurant à la Chick-fil-A developed by Yum, which opened in Arlington in April.

The branch at the airport, which takes over the space formerly occupied by an Asian restaurant called Blue Bamboo, will be open longer hours, including early morning, with a broader menu than the shop previously pegged to open near Southern Methodist University. That shop, located at 5629 SMU Blvd. in the old Marion's Automotive space, is still under construction and isn't slated to open until the fall.

Yum, which also owns Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut, has been tight-lipped regarding the details on its test concepts, which also include a taco chain called U.S. Taco Co.
