In this video, the second of Old Forester’s Cocktail Chronicles series, Dallas bartender Spencer Shelton demonstrates how to put a tart twist on an old fashioned: with grapefruit.
Follow his recipe below to re-create the drink for yourself.
Ruby Red Old Fashioned
Yields 1 drink
2 ounces of Old Forester Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky
2-3 dashes of grapefruit bitters
.25 ounce simple syrup
Ruby red grapefruit peel
Three medium-sized basil leaves
Pour simple syrup into the glass. Add a little bit of fresh grapefruit peel and basil leaves, then muddle.
Add whisky, grapefruit bitters, ice, and stir.
Strain over large-format ice cube into new glass. Garnish with grapefruit peel and basil.
