What: Inaugural Speedflex-a-thon

Where: Speedflex Dallas

The 411: Local celebs and social swells came together to burn calories and raise money for Best Buddies Texas, which is dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Sixteen teams of 10 worked out for 30-minute sessions, over a 12-hour period, and assistant coaches from Best Buddies Dallas helped pump up teams during workouts to achieve maximum calorie burn. Prior to the event, more than $75,000 had already been committed by event sponsors, each pledging a certain dollar amount per calorie burned throughout the fitness party. In total, the first Speedflex-a-thon raised more than $80,000— $7,000 over the original goal.

Who: Captains included Marty Turco, Dale Hansen, Larry North, Kenny Rogers, Roger Staubach and Calvert Collins. Participants included Krystal Schlegel, Tiffany Cuban, Jessica Knopick, Debbie and John Tolleson, Jan and Jeff Rich, Tara and Bill Durham, and Marion and Bennett Glazer.
