Where To Drink Now

Where to drink in Dallas right now: 5 bars for refreshing summer cocktails

Lindsey Wilson
Jun 9, 2016 | 11:35 am

The heat has begun. And though we haven't hit 100-degree days yet, they're surely coming. So, what better way to welcome them than with an ice-cold summer cocktail in your hand?

These restaurants and bars are concocting sips that conjure up everything from tropical escapes to sophisticated summer jaunts. Grab a tiny umbrella and let's go.

Knuckle Sandwich Company
The fellows behind Parliament, Eddie "Lucky" Campbell and Andrew Brimecome, recently opened a deli-bar hybrid on Greenville Avenue that specializes in killer subs and craft cocktails. The Knuckle Punch, which is mixed from 86 Co. Caña Brava rum, orgeat, citrus, and spices, is a summer standout, combining all the flavors for an exotic — but not spicy — antidote to the heat.

Cafe Salsera
The Latin joint in Deep Ellum is adding to its margarita-fueled happy hour with the addition of $10 mojito carafes on Fridays only. Now, you can order hibiscus or regular mojitos any day of the week for lunch or dinner, but to get the shareable (or not, whatever you're into) size of the original, you have to go on Fridays between 11 am and 2 pm.

Cantina Laredo
You know what's refreshing? Ginger beer. Cantina Laredo knows this and is putting a twist on the traditional Moscow mule for the summer season. There's the Smoke & Fire Mule, made of Montelobos Mezcal Joven, fresh lime juice, agave nectar, and ginger beer, garnished with an orange slice and a cinnamon stick, and the Smoked Peach Mule, with Montelobos Mezcal Joven, Deep Eddy peach vodka, lemon juice, and ginger beer. If — the horror! — you're not a ginger beer fan, there's also a Desert Pear Mojito, made from Don Q Cristal rum, fresh mint, squeezed lime, and desert pear.

The Woolworth
A pineapple is a traditional symbol of welcome, so when The Woolworth brings out the giant copper pineapple that its Chill Factor is served in, the bar clearly wants you to stay a while. The cocktail, which is shareable for two, is Absolute Elyx vodka, chamomile syrup, elderflower liquor, lavender honey, edible flowers, and dry ice. Dry ice equals major cool factor.

The Rustic
Even though it's only going into its third year, The Rustic has made sure that a Dallas summer isn't complete without its popsicle frozen drinks. Order a margarita, sangrita, or other frozen cocktail in a giant glass goblet, and top it off with a SocialIce boozy popsicle. Much more festive than freezing grapes to put in your wine.

Stay cool with the Chill Factor at The Woolworth.

Luxury steakhouse Steak 48 poised for Dallas debut at prime location

A luxury steakhouse from a celebrated culinary family is coming to Dallas. Steak 48 will soon begin construction on a 14,000-square-foot restaurant in Dallas' Knox-Henderson area, at the corner of McKinney and Monticello avenues.

Spearheaded by brothers Jeffrey and Michael Mastro, Steak 48 Dallas will showcase "the signature personalized service, prime steaks, fresh seafood, world-class Wagyu selections, and luxury dining experience" that the family is known for, the announcement says.

In recent decades, the Mastro family has become famous in the food world for their modern takes on the classic steakhouse. They first created Mastro’s Steakhouse and Mastro’s Ocean Club, which they sold in 2007. Steak 48 is one of six concepts currently under their Prime Steak Concepts umbrella; Dallas will mark the seventh location.

The new Dallas steakhouse will be the group's second restaurant — and largest — in Texas. It promises a “distinctly Dallas” menu and atmosphere, which will include what is sure to be a showstopping, second-floor indoor pool surrounded by chic, white-tablecloth dining.

All of that square footage will accommodate a variety of dining atmospheres under one roof, including a room that allows guests to watch everything going on inside the kitchen through floor-to-ceiling glass walls.

“We love Dallas and have spent years searching for the right location. We are so grateful to have found one and to finally be coming to this city,” says Oliver Badgio, chief brand officer, in the announcement. “This neighborhood has an energy that’s hard to miss, which makes it an exciting place for us to put down roots and build something special.”

Steak 48 Dallas will offer an upmarket take on the classic American steakhouse, with prime steaks, fresh seafood, and shellfish complemented by an array of inventive appetizers, entrées, and sides. Steaks come in a variety of cuts and sizes, and even less-carnivorous diners will be able to enjoy a range of appetizers, side dishes, and raw bar delights.

Signature Steak 48 offerings that will make the cut on the Dallas menu include the Colossal Shrimp Cocktail, Chef's Cut Hanging Bacon, Corn Crème Brûlée, and Caviar Cones.

The food menu is complemented by an extensive wine list and craft cocktail program, and, of utmost importance, according to the release, is sourcing the highest quality ingredients and prioritizing locally grown products when available.

Construction on the Dallas location is set to begin soon, with an anticipated opening date still to be announced.
