Restaurant surprises and scary shootings lead this week's 5 most popular stories

Editor's note: Another week has come and gone, and there's a lot we all probably missed. But we're looking out for you, kid. Here are the most popular stories from this past week:

1. Tupinamba Tex-Mex departs Inwood for new digs at hot Dallas intersection. After 18 years at its current address, veteran Tex-Mex restaurant Tupinamba is moving to a new location. Owner Eddie Dominguez confirms that the restaurant will be moving east, from Inwood Road at the Dallas North Tollway to a frontage-road location at the very hot intersection of US 75 at Walnut Hill Lane.

2. Bonchon Chicken Dallas gives Greenville Avenue the bird. The Dallas branch of international chicken chain Bonchon Chicken is closing, possibly as soon as July 26 but definitely "within two weeks," confirmed the company's franchise division in New York. According to a manager at the restaurant, the location will be reconcepted into a more traditional restaurant called Ashwood, which he described as a "bar and burger joint."

3. Boulevardier sibling Rapscallion to bring Southern food to bustling Greenville Avenue. Dallas' Greenville Avenue continues to assert itself as the most surprising foodie neighborhood in Dallas, as another new restaurant from well-respected operators joins the parade: Rapscallion will be a new bistro from the team behind Boulevardier, to be located in the space between Trader Joe's and The Libertine.

4. Man shot on Dallas North Tollway in Park Cities may have been victim of road rage. A 36-year-old man was shot while driving on the Dallas North Tollway in the Park Cities early Wednesday morning. The victim, who was not seriously injured, called 911 around 2 am from the nearby 4600 block of West Mockingbird Lane.

5. Teenager killed in drive-by shooting in Far North Dallas. A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed in an apparent drive-by shooting in Far North Dallas on July 21. According to police, multiple shots were fired from a vehicle in the 9700 block of Forest Lane, near LBJ Freeway.

1. How the new Texas car inspection law affects end-of-year stickers. Beginning January 1, 2025, Texas vehicle owners will no longer be required to obtain a safety inspection prior to vehicle registration. House Bill 3297, passed during the 88th Legislature in 2023, abolishes the vehicle safety inspection program for regular cars and trucks. Here's what it means for stickers expiring at the end of this year.

2. Dallas' SMU anointed No. 1 Christian college in new national ranking. Amen and Pony up! Dallas' Southern Methodist University has been named the best Christian college in the U.S. in a new national ranking of universities. Niche, an education review and ranking website, has rated SMU No. 1 among Best Christian Colleges in America for 2025, two places ahead of cross-town rival TCU.

3. East Texas man gets 6 years in penitentiary for cruelty to animals. A Wills Point man who pleaded guilty to animal cruelty is headed for the penitentiary: James Henry Eubanks, who was arrested in January after leaving dogs out in the cold to die, was sentenced to six years in a Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison on September 6 after pleading guilty to Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animals, a 3rd degree felony.

4. 9 mega-restaurants from out of town coming to Dallas in fall 2024. Dallas has always been an appealing place to open a restaurant, both to locals and out-of-towners alike. But with so many forecasts about Dallas' growing population and economic prosperity, the out-of-town interest has escalated, with many high-profile and high-roller openings now on the books.

5. State Fair of Texas adds 13 buzzy new food concessions to 2024 lineup. The State Fair of Texas will introduce a lucky 13 new food concessions for the 2024 event: According to a release, the 13 will include six new food vendors and seven new food stands.
