The Old Monk
At this longtime Henderson Avenue favorite, the darkness of the interior — even during daylight hours — brings new meaning to the phrase "mood lighting." And the side patio is the perfect perch from which to watch pretty people parade down Henderson Avenue. (We dare you to say that three times fast.) The Monk deserves credit for the more than 40 whiskeys and bourbons and the list of draughts, bottles, ciders and combinations that’s far too long for us to count effectively — especially after we’ve had a few. But the food is equally noteworthy, and the lineup of pub-style fare rarely changes. The fish and chips, made with Atlantic cod in a thick crunchy batter, have a loyal following — though possibly not as loyal as those who worship the mussels, steamed in Hoegaarden Belgian white ale. Atlantic cod is cooked perfectly inside their crispy, battered sleeves and flecked with salt and pepper.
