Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse
For many years, this original branch of Sonny Bryan's was the only noteworthy barbecue restaurant in town and a destination for out-of-towners who didn't have the time to drive to Central Texas. Sonny Bryan's has since become a watered-down chain, and the local barbecue scene has improved. But many still hold a special place in their heart for this shaggy Inwood Road drive-up, opened in 1958 by William "Sonny" Jennings Bryan Jr., and his wife, Joanne. A different family now manages 14 locations of the chain. This branch is noted for its beef sandwiches, thick onion rings and divey atmosphere. Many stand by the barbecue sauce including famed Dallas chef Dean Fearing.
