Calling All Artists
West Village debuts rotating mural competition — with a timed twist
In 2016, West Village commissioned Dallas artist Ricardo Paniagua to create a vibrant mural at Center Drive, between Taco Diner and Malai Kitchen.
Super Deluxe, which measures an eye-popping 13 feet by 40 feet, has become a favorite Instagram backdrop — but it's about to have some company.
Every 90 days throughout 2018, a different painting will be selected to occupy the 10-by-14-foot cinder block space beside Paniagua's popular work. Each winning artist will receive a $500 supply stipend, as well as a $1,000 honorarium. But here's the kicker: they'll only have 48 hours in which to create it.
The first round of submissions for this competition, dubbed the 48-Hour Fresco, are due by 11:59 pm on January 24. The first lucky artist will be announced on January 28, and get to work on his or her masterpiece during the afternoon of February 2.
To enter, submit your design proposal and a creative sample of your existing work to 48HourFresco@WestVil.com. Remember that the judges are looking for ideas that are "bold and colorful," and ones that can — obviously — be completed within 48 hours.
