Since 2009, Gaia has had Dallasites and their homes looking good for a good cause, and now the community-minded company is branching out into hands-on events.
Paula Minnis founded Gaia to empower refugee women who had resettled in Dallas through employment, encouragement, and dedication to long-term success. The women handmake a wide range of products using vintage and sustainable materials, turning them into the most adorable jewelry, accessories, and home decor.
And now those vibrantly colored bags and earrings aren't the only thing to love about Gaia. The company has started offering creative workshops and children's and adults' art classes at its Uptown storefront, and groups will soon be able to rent out the space for private events.
The successful launch of its new Kids Art Workshop was held in September, with 22 kiddos — including several Syrian refugees — creating watercolors under the instruction of Dallas artist Mione Plant. Minnis promises this class was the first of many.
And grown-ups will get to have some fun, too. November 14 from 6-8 pm is the kickoff for a new series called Gaia Creates. The two-hour event plans to bring artists (including Plant) together with the surrounding community through conversation and, of course, art.
The 21-and-up event will have light bites, beverages, and all the supplies needed to create a new masterpiece. The first hour of the class will be dedicated to sketching and visual storytelling, while the second half will challenge students to paint, shade, blend, and learn acrylic techniques to complete striking masterpieces. Plus, all attendees can shop the store with a sweet discount.
