The best Dallas events to spread holiday cheer

    Alex Bentley
    Dec 8, 2015 | 12:15 pm

There is no shortage of holiday events to choose from in and around Dallas. Lucky for you, we've created the following guide to shine a light on the best holiday happenings — from festive events to cheerful productions.

    Festive events
The following events take place throughout the holidays, so you can attend whenever the time is right for you.

    The Trains at NorthPark
There are few Dallas holiday traditions as enduring as The Trains at NorthPark, which is now in its 28th year and 17th at NorthPark Center. Sixteen-hundred feet of track takes trains through landmarks across America, including the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge and Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Times Square in New York City, and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The trains run on time through January 3.

    Holiday at the Arboretum
It's one thing to hear "The 12 Days of Christmas" sung throughout the holidays, but it's quite another to see each of the verses brought to life at the 12 Days of Christmas at the Dallas Arboretum. Back for its second year, everything from a partridge in a pear tree to 12 drummers drumming gets its own gazebo, and many feature animated characters, lights, and snow. This year, the Arboretum has added 500,000 lights throughout the garden and a 30-foot-tall tree at the center of property. The exhibit is up through January 3.

    Prairie Lights in Grand Prairie
Everybody loves to look at Christmas lights, and one of the better displays around is this annual event at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie. Featuring 4 million lights set along two miles of path, it has hundreds of all-new displays in shapes of all kinds lining and arching over the roads. Halfway through the drive, visitors can get out of their cars for a stop at Holiday Village, where they'll find food, gifts, Santa Claus, an all-new indoor laser show, and the Holiday Magic Lighted Walk-Through Forest. The second half of the drive ends with an animated light tunnel. You can experience the fun through January 3.

Gaylord Texan presents ICE! featuring Christmas Around the World
The annual popular attraction at Grapevine's Gaylord Texan resort features colorful holiday sculptures hand-carved out of more than 2 million pounds of ice. The display this year shows how Christmas is celebrated around the world. There are also two-story-tall ice slides, a 12-lane snow tubing hill, an interactive ice carving station, and more. ICE! will be open through January 3.

    Texas Christkindl Market
This German-themed market outside of Globe Life Park in Arlington features a unique shopping experience for gifts and holiday decorations along with authentic German cuisine, holiday beverages, live entertainment, children’s activities, and much more. It runs through December 23.

    Theater, theater, and more theater
'Tis the season for fun, holiday-themed productions.

Dallas Opera presents Becoming Santa Claus
A world premiere two years in the making, Becoming Santa Claus tells the story of young Prince Claus who, just after celebrating his 13th birthday, sees a star in the sky signaling a momentous birth. Claus decides to dazzle this newborn with an assortment of the very latest toys before discovering that love is the most treasured gift of all. The opera plays only four times through December 12 at Winspear Opera House.

Dallas Theater Center presents A Christmas Carol
DTC has now put on Charles Dickens' classic story for over 30 years. This year the company is mixing things up by having Hassan El-Amin play the role of Ebenezer Scrooge and Brierley Resident Acting Company member Christie Vela be the play's first female director. The production will run at Wyly Theatre through December 26.

Theatre Three presents A Christmas Carol: The Radio Play
You won't be able to stop laughing as B.J. Cleveland plays a beleaguered radio station manager forced to play all 21 characters in a radio production of A Christmas Carol when the cast gets caught in a snowstorm. The play will run at Theatre Three's basement space, Theatre Too, through December 20.

Dallas Summer Musicals presents Elf the Musical
Running December 8-20 at the Music Hall at Fair Park, this adaptation of the Will Ferrell holiday movie is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan who is raised by elves, unaware that he is actually a human. A journey to New York to find his real father brings out the Christmas spirit in everyone.

    Peter Pan 360
True, it's not technically a holiday-themed play, but since the family-friendly production just extended its run through January 3, it's definitely a good option to consider. Peter Pan, Wendy, and the Lost Boys take on Captain Hook and his crew in a special tent in the Dallas Arts District.

    Holiday music festivals
These concerts may or may not feature holiday music, but they've become a traditional part of many people's holidays.

    How the Edge Stole Christmas
The 2015 edition of KDGE-FM's annual holiday festival, taking place at Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie on December 9, will feature performances from Of Monsters and Men, Sublime with Rome, Panic! At The Disco, The Neighbourhood, The Struts, and Atlas Genius.

    Not So Silent Night
Head out to South Side Ballroom on December 15 to catch performances by Fall Out Boy and British singer/songwriters James Bay and George Ezra.

    Rock your Christmas
Finally, a few well-known bands will put on holiday concerts.

The Brian Setzer Orchestra: 12th Annual Christmas Rocks! Tour
Even though Setzer's annual visit moves from Dallas to Allen this year, his concert at Allen Event Center on December 11 will still be a blast as Setzer infuses the crowd with his infectious rockabilly style, tackling his hits and unique versions of holiday classics.

The Polyphonic Spree 13th Annual Holiday Extravaganza
Dallas' own choral rock band moves from the defunct Lakewood Theater to the larger stage of the Majestic Theatre on December 12 for a family-friendly party. In addition to the great music, the event will feature face painting, balloon animals, and visits from Santa, Mrs. Claus, Rudolph, and more for photo opportunities.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra presents The Ghosts of Christmas Eve
Just a few days before Christmas, Trans-Siberian Orchestra presents The Ghosts of Christmas Eve at American Airlines Center, doing two shows on December 20. TSO will also release its newest full-length album titled Letters From the Labyrinth, with every ticketholder receiving a digital download.

The Gaylord Texan resort in Grapevine will present ICE! through January 3, 2016.

Klyde Warren Park will host free watch parties for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Dallas' Klyde Warren Park is set to become one big watch party for 2026 FIFA World Cup. The park will host free public viewing events for nearly the entire tournament, showing dozens of matches on a giant outdoor LED screen in the heart of downtown Dallas.

According to a release, the park's "Global Watch Parties" will run from June 11-July 19, turning the 5.4-acre green space into a gathering spot for both devoted soccer fans and those who just want to experience the excitement of the tournament with others.

The watch parties will be free to attend and are expected to draw thousands of local residents and international visitors. Matches will be broadcast live from FOX and Telemundo in both English and Spanish. The park's viewing schedule can be found here.

Games will be shown every day of the tournament except Saturday, July 4 and designated tournament "rest" days on July 8, 12, 13, 16, and 17. Programming could begin as early as 6 am and continue until 10 pm, according to the release.

In addition to the matches themselves, visitors can expect food trucks, dining options, live music, fitness classes, family activities, public art installations, and appearances by local soccer organizations and community partners.

On weekends, Olive Street between the east and west sides of the park will be converted into a pedestrian plaza to improve access and accommodate larger crowds, organizers say.

“Klyde Warren Park has always been Dallas’ town square — a place where people from every neighborhood, background and culture come together to celebrate the moments that define our city,” says Kit Sawers, president and CEO of Klyde Warren Park, in the release. “The FIFA World Cup will bring the world to North Texas, and we’re proud to provide a free, welcoming space where fans and families can experience the excitement together in the heart of Dallas.”

Fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to watch games from the lawn, while surrounding restaurants and food vendors will help create a festival atmosphere throughout the tournament.

The schedule overlaps with Klyde Warren Park's annual Independence Day celebration (including the fireworks) on July 4, adding another major event to a busy summer in Dallas.

“These watch parties extend the World Cup experience far beyond the stadium,” Sawers says. “Whether you have match tickets or not, this gives everyone an opportunity to be part of the energy, pride and global connection that comes with hosting one of the world’s biggest sporting events.”

Nine FIFA World Cup matches (more than in any other host city) will be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, dubbed "Dallas Stadium," for the tournament. They will start with Netherlands vs. Japan on June 14, followed by England vs. Croatia on June 17, Argentina vs. Austria on June 22, Japan vs. Sweden on June 25, and Jordan vs. Argentina on June 27.

The stadium will also host two Round of 32 matches (June 30 and July 3), one Round of 16 match (July 6), and one Semi-Final match (July 14).

Early estimates said Dallas-Fort Worth could welcome nearly 4 million visitors during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
