    Luxury Garage Sale

Get ready for a new way to shop for discounted designer finds in Dallas

A new shopping experience is coming to Dallas, and it’s sure to please local lovers of all things luxury. Called Luxury Garage Sale, it will have fashionistas rethinking how they shop for designer goods on consignment.

The Chicago-based enterprise intends to open its second bricks-and-mortar boutique this summer in Dallas. While they hammer down those details, founders Lindsay Segal and Brielle Buchberg are hosting a series of pop-up shops March 20-April 12 at Mecox, featuring handbags, clothing and accessories from such designers as Chanel, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Celine and Oscar de la Renta at deeply discounted prices.

Segal and Buchberg started Luxury Garage Sale as a pop-up shopping event in Chicago, which eventually led to their opening a permanent store in the city’s Old Town neighborhood in 2012. Last year, the duo took their show on the road, holding events throughout the Midwest.

Buchberg says that this is not your everyday consignment shop experience.

“Luxury Garage Sale prides itself on redefining consignment as a luxury experience,” Buchberg says. “When you walk into our store, all traditional notions of overcrowded consignment shopping go away.”

The store in Chicago, staffed by hands-on stylists, features a curated selection of high-end, coveted merchandise. It’s a mix of gently used, vintage and brand-new items with the tags still on. Goods range from $100 pieces of costume jewelry to Hermes Birkin bags, and they are presented beautifully. There are no impenetrable racks to sort through.

Luxury Garage Sale works with consignors around the country and receives the inventory in a variety of ways. Clients can drop items off at the Chicago store (no appointment necessary), send them in from out of state with a pre-paid shipping label or a white-glove delivery service can pick up items from someone’s home — even in Dallas.

Once Luxury Garage Sale receives the items, they are inventoried, authenticated, photographed, listed online and showcased in the boutique. Once an item sells, the consignor gets paid, and Luxury Garage Sale takes a 40 percent commission.

So what kind of deals are we talking about here? Well, that depends. Luxury Garage Sale bases prices on brand, style, wear and current market value. The girls take note of what similar items have most recently sold for online in order to competitively price their inventory. Prices and the actual discount range, but markdowns can range from 10 to 90 percent retail.

The upcoming pop-up at Mecox gives Dallasites an opportunity to preview this stylish secondhand shopping experience.

“The Dallas woman is incredibly stylish, fashion forward, and has a sophisticated taste level that will appreciate and understand our curated, high-designer merchandise and the ‘LGS aesthetic,’” Segal says. “There is nothing like us in Dallas, and we are excited to bring our luxe merchandise to a new city.”

Luxury Garage Sale is popping up at Mecox from March 20-April 12, in advance of finding a permanent location in Dallas.

    RETAIL APOCALYPSE

Mall favorite Francesca's to close all stores in Dallas and nationwide

Francesca's is known for its boho-chic dresses and tops.

After a decade of falling fortunes, Texas-based women’s clothing chain Francesca’s is clearing out all its racks. The once-mighty retailer is closing all of its stores nationwide, including several locations in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Although the company has not made any official pronouncement, Women’s Wear Daily reports that the brand is currently in the process of liquidating all of its inventory. According to the fashion industry trade journal, some employees are reporting that they were let go without warning, while vendors are allegedly seeking payment on hundreds of millions of dollars in unpaid invoices.

Francesca’s was founded in Houston in 1999, becoming sought out for its boho-chic offerings that occupied a similar lane to Anthropologie. Over roughly 15 years, it quickly ramped up its footprint, peaking at over 600 locations by 2016.

That explosive growth did not prove to be popular with shareholders. That same year, the Wall Street Journal reported that its stock prices had plunged to their lowest price since Francesca’s went public in 2011. Despite leadership changes, the chain has been on a downward slope since.

In 2020, Francesca’s filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection while it sought a buyer for its online operation and brick-and-mortar stores. The chain closed almost 250 of its storefronts by early 2021.

After completing reorganization and being bought out of bankruptcy by an affiliate of TerraMar Capital and Tiger Capital Group, Francesca’s attempted a revival by launching a tween line, Franki by Francesca’s, and gobbling up celebrity-endorsed lifestyle brand Richer Poorer.

Francesca's still had Dallas-Fort Worth stores in West Village, Galleria Dallas, Stonebriar Centre in Frisco, Firewheel Town Center in Garland, The Shops at Legacy in Plano, The Shops at Highland Village, Southlake Town Square, NorthEast Mall, Arlington Highlands, Glade Park in Euless, and Sundance Square and The Shops at Clearfork in Fort Worth.

It’s unclear exactly when the local stores will shutter, but the company recently changed its return policy to state all sales are final after January 14. A request to Francesca’s corporate headquarters for comment was not immediately returned.
