The Dallas chapter of the American Institute of Architects hosts its ninth annual tour of homes November 14-15, showcasing the best local examples of modern design. The price of admission is $25 in advance, $30 at the door, or $10 for a single home.

Here’s a taste of what’s on the tour.

3974 Durango Dr.

This 2015 construction may be modern, but it has a traditional farmhouse design. The highlights of this 3,700-square-foot open concept property are the three wrap-around porches that feature an outdoor fireplace, wood-fired oven, and a screened-in porch that serves as an extension of the dining room.

9 Vanguard Way

This simple, 2,150-square-foot treehouse in the Urban Reserve was constructed with recycled/recyclable building materials. Its location serves as the serene view for the entire backside of the home. Like most conscious constructions in the neighborhood, solar strategies are used throughout the home to keep the owner's footprint as small as possible.


3 Winding Lake Dr.

A young family from Mexico City hit it out of the park when they had this 2015 construction built. It was constructed so that all eyes are drawn to the pool and spring-fed pond. Another highlight of the property is the staircase that is built with a combination of wood, steel, and glass.

1818 Browder St.

All 2,700 square feet of this masterpiece in The Cedars remains true to the industrial neighborhood. Although the outside comprises cement, stucco, sheet metal, and wood batten accents, the interior is slightly more refined — even offering red oak floors on the upper level. Inside, guests are delighted to find two stories of living space around a large courtyard.


9207 Sunnybrook Ln.

This home blends in with its natural surroundings, which is no small feat at nearly 9,000 square feet. Interpreted by its owners as a series of structures revealing outdoor rooms, the sanctuary accentuates the daylight. An added bonus is the 1,497-square-foot guest house by the sleek infinity pool.

4404 Briar Creek Ln.

Once in danger of being demolished, this midcentury modern home, located along a tributary of White Rock Lake, was spared when its current owners opted instead for an extensive renovation in 2013. All 3,400 square feet of space was reworked to reveal an open floorplan, vaulted ceilings, and improved energy performance.

5544 Waneta Dr.

Although it is located in Greenway Parks, this home’s 2011 remodel proves that there is a place for contemporary architecture in every neighborhood. More impressive: The 4,379-square-foot stunner was built within the guidelines of a conservation district.
