Renowned interior designer Alex Papachristidis finds beauty in every place, including Texas
If you’ve never met a famed international interior designer, you might look to his designs to imagine what he might be like in person. But, upon conversing with world-renowned New York City-based designer Alex Papachristidis, he is even more bright and charming than imagined.
Papachristidis was in Dallas recently at Nest, to sign his first book, The Age of Elegance. His portfolio stands as a testament to his design talents, but he comes across as an extraordinary individual committed to the beauty of life and living.
He strives daily to live an aesthetically pleasing lifestyle, seemingly free from much of the mess a creative mind can often leave in its wake. To wit: He even removes price tags from groceries.
“I love Texas,” Papachristidis says. “I love the zest for living and the lifestyle that goes with having so much wide-open space.”
So did his December trip to Dallas meet his high marks when it comes to design and style? “My partner Scott and I love Texas,” Papachristidis says. “We go as often as we can. I love the zest for living and the lifestyle that goes with having so much wide-open space. We’ve seen so many beautiful homes. It was a wonderful experience. I can’t wait to go back.”
Of his premiere coffee table tome, Papachristidis says, ”It was one of the easiest things I’ve ever done.” He notes the book’s incredible photography and the team at Rizzoli as integral components to perfecting the final bound product. And, right in time for the holiday season, it’s a most excellent gift for any design lover.
Speaking of which, what’s on his personal gift guide this year? “I am very excited about the gift I’m giving my sister,” Papachristidis says. “I know an artist who is a dear friend, Mita Corsini Bland, and she does wonderful room renderings. She will be painting a portrait of my sister’s poodle, Biriba.
“My sister always does so much for me, and it’s hard to find her something unique and special. It’s the perfect gift for her.”
As for Papachristidis, he has no material wish list of his own. “I always feel so blessed,” he says, “It’s like Christmas every day for me. So the only thing I am looking forward to receiving is health, happiness and good cheer for all of us.”
So how does he create holiday cheer in his own home? “Because we won’t be home in New York this year, we are not decorating, but my usual decorations in our country home include real pine cones and everything in gold for the tree with my collection of Christmas decorations,” he says, “All the mantles and staircases are draped in natural pine cone garlands with gold ribbons.”
Now that he has finished his new book, what is Papachristidis looking forward to most this holiday season? “Being with my friends and family,” he says. “But it will be a unique Christmas, because it is the first without my mother, who passed away this year.
“We usually spend Christmas in our country home in Bridgehampton, Long Island. This year, we will be going to stay with our best friends in Palm Beach. I am happy to be doing something different.”
No matter where he is, Papachristidis is certain to take his esteemed eye for beauty with him. We know what we’re adding to our own wish lists: his new book, continued inspiration from Alex Papachristidis Interiors and more visits to Texas from the man himself.
