Smallcakes gives Dallas a shot at sweetness with new cupcake shop
A cupcake concept that first premiered in Dallas in 2013 is giving sweet fiends a second chance. Smallcakes, a dessert chain based in Kansas City, will open a location just east of US-75, in the Medallion Center, at 6464 E. Northwest Hwy. In sweet irony, it's going into an address that was once home to a location of Jenny Craig.
Owners are husband-and-wife John and Michelle Tatum who confirm that the shop will open in February.
Smallcakes made its first pass at Dallas in 2013 when it opened a location at Mockingbird Station. But that location closed down when the owner moved out of state. The chain currently has 11 locations in the DFW area, including Frisco, Plano, Fort Worth, and on Preston Road near Addison.
The Tatums were looking to do a business they could call their own, Michelle says.
"We wanted to collaborate on something, and we really liked their products," she says. "The cupcakes are baked fresh every day, and they're really good and moist. The icings are real buttercream, real cream cheese, and there's a variety of flavors."
The shops offer a dozen cupcake flavors daily, most of them chocolate, including caramel crunch, chocolate cream, chocoholic, cookies n crème, and peanut butter cup. In addition, there's a rotation of 100-plus flavors such as maple bacon, pumpkin, sweet potato and caramel apple pie.
In addition to cupcakes, they'll be doing ice cream — they'll make their own — plus cookies, brownies, malts, ice cream sandwiches, and a thing called a "cupcake smash" — a cupcake cut in half with ice cream in the middle, sort of like a cupcake ice cream sandwich.
Michelle says that they also liked that they could put their personal touch onto the store.
"It's not a formula — all the stores are different," she says. "They serve the same product but our environment can be different. That part was really appealing, that it would reflect who we are."
They're currently finishing up construction on their location at Medallion Center, where they can serve the many neighborhoods east of 75 including Lakewood and Lake Highlands, where John graduated from high school.
The location has plenty of parking and space not only for cupcakes and other treats to go but also a dining room for consumption of cupcakes on-site.
"We wanted to make sure that it was a place where you could stop in and have a treat with your kids," Michelle says.
