Sweat in the city: Flywheel Sports set to spin in Dallas
Fitness enthusiasts looking to change up their routine will soon have a new place to sweat. Flywheel Sports, “an unparalleled indoor cycling experience,” is set to open its 16th studio in Dallas October 22, on Oak Lawn Avenue across from Equinox.
Starlets like Katie Holmes and Kelly Ripa swear by the super-intense spinning workout. Studios have spread – make that spun – across the nation since its February 2010 inception in Manhattan. Heck, there’s even a Flywheel Sports in Dubai.
So what’s the deal with the craze?
Founded by spin enthusiast and fitness expert Ruth Zukerman, Flywheel combines a super-intense and effective spin workout with state-of-the-art technology. Stadium-style seating sounds cushy, but there’s no relaxing here. The 45 or so bikes are simply set up in a curved and tiered layout so that each rider has an unobstructed view of the instructor.
This workout is about intensity — riding as hard you can while climbing, descending and working your arms to get full-body benefits. If you're the competitive type (oh, admit it), you can compete with a classmate, because the proprietary TorqBoard at the front of the room displays where you stand in the race.
You can set your speed and resistance, then monitor performance on a personal digital screen. You can even set a goal for yourself and store your performance data online.
