Dallas Symphony Orchestra goes for a Grammy with summer album featuring Mahler's Mighty Sixth
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra is in the middle of its last performances before heading to Europe for a spring break trip, and conductor Jaap van Zweden decided it's the perfect time for another recording session.
All of this weekend's performances of Mahler's Mighty Sixth at Meyerson Symphony Center will appear on a future album. The concert is headlined by Mahler's Symphony No. 6, but also features two of Vivaldi's recorder concertos, for which the DSO has brought in recorder virtuoso Erik Bosgraaf.
Mahler has proven to be favorite of the DSO over the years, as the group has recorded his various symphonies six times. However, this will be the first time to record his Sixth Symphony.
According to Chris Shull of the DSO, van Zweden thinks very highly of the piece and the DSO's ability to perform it. The orchestra has played it multiple times in the past two seasons.
This recording will be part the DSO's 80th album since 1946 and its fifth under van Zweden. The 2012 album, Stucky: August 4, 1964, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. Shull says the plan is to release the next album on the DSO Live label sometime this summer.
