A Dallas Tex-Mex favorite is expanding west. Blue Goose Cantina, which has been a Lower Greenville institution for more than 35 years, will open its first location in Fort Worth's University Park Village.
A representative from the company confirms that the restaurant will open at 1600 University Dr., in what was most recently a Bread Winners, which closed in May after only two years. But more relevantly, it was for many years a location of Blue Mesa Grill.
"I think renovations have just begun, and we're looking at opening in the fall," she says.
Blue Goose opened on Greenville Avenue in 1984, and has been a staple for its fajitas, frozen margaritas served in frosty ice-cold mugs, and patio overlooking the action. It's one of the hottest seats on the street during the annual St. Patrick's Day festivities.
Chips and salsa are always fresh, the fajitas come out fast, and they do on-point versions of staples including queso, guacamole, and sour chicken enchiladas.
They've kept up with the times, adding vegetarian options such as tacos made with the amazingly beef-like Impossible plant-based meat, and avocado "toast-ada" served with black beans and poblano lime rice. They've also updated their beverage list with new drinks such as the Fresh Pickle Tickle, and their brunch menu available Saturday-Sunday 10 am to 3 pm, with new dishes such as churro French toast.
Many consider Blue Goose to be a Dallas rite of passage.
Two airline employees opened the first location in 1984, fashioned after an establishment in Central America, and it has always been family owned. Nick Peterson, who currently runs the show, is the son of co-founder Bob Peterson. They also own the Aw Shucks chain.
Fort Worth will be the eighth location. In addition to Greenville Avenue, there are also locations in Addison, Frisco, Plano, McKinney, Grapevine, Highland Village, and Plano, which they've been remodeling, including the addition of a tiled tortilla station.
