Dallas boasts trio of smartest private high schools in U.S. — and No. 1 in Texas

    Jennifer Chininis
    Mar 25, 2015 | 4:17 pm

According to new national rankings, there are some pretty smart kids graduating from Dallas-area private high schools. Business Insider has a roundup of the 50 smartest private high schools in the country, and three in Dallas made the cut: St. Mark's School of Texas, Hockaday and Cistercian Preparatory School.

The rankings were determined by Niche, a database of information about schools, by weighing each school's composite SAT/ACT score, the average score of the colleges attended by graduates, the percentage of graduates who go on to attend a four-year college and student-teacher ratios.

St. Mark's ranks No. 8 in the country and No. 1 in Texas. About the school, BI has this to say:

In addition to high SAT scores, students at all-boys St. Mark's School of Texas earn an impressive average of 33 out of 36 on the ACT as well. The school's challenging curriculum prepares students for first-class colleges, with Duke University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Texas at Austin among the most popular.

Further down is all-girls Hockaday at No. 21. Those Hockadasies have reason to be proud: Last year, 96 percent of them received a score of 3 or higher on their Advanced Placement exams — the school offers 18 AP courses — and the class of 2014 also turned out 21 National Merit finalists and 22 National Merit semifinalists.

At No. 50 is Cistercian Preparatory School in Irving, where "the curriculum weaves together both academic and religious teachings" and students are offered 25 different AP classes; last year, 93 percent earned a 3 or higher on those exams.

St. John's School and the Kinkaid School also made the top 50 list, at Nos. 13 and 48, respectively. The No. 1 spot went to the Castilleja School in Palo Alto, California.

    Hockaday ranks No. 21.

Southwest Airlines signs on for another 15 years at Dallas Love Field

Southwest Airlines has signed on with Dallas for 15 more years. According to a release, the Dallas City Council extended Southwest Airlines’ lease for 18 gates at Dallas Love Field (DAL) until September 2040.

It's a pro-active step: The current lease expires in September 2028, but the Department of Aviation proposed the early completion of a new and subsequent Use and Lease Agreement with the airline, in order to secure predictable costs and create financial and operational stability as the number of passengers flying through the airport increases.

Dallas Love Field is the busiest medium hub airport in the U.S., serving approximately 17 million passengers annually.

Finalizing the agreement at this stage provides a foundation for long-term planning and investment, helping to position Dallas Love Field to meet rising passenger demand, especially with annual boarding projected to reach 10 million by the end of 2026.

This agreement also sets Dallas Love Field up to begin relieving congestion and continue efficient operations.

In a statement, Southwest Airlines president and CEO Bob Jordan recalled the airline's beginnings.

“Our first flight took off from Love Field in 1971, and our purpose today is just as fulfilling as it was then—to connect people to what matters most in their lives with friendly, reliable, and low-cost air travel," Jordan said. "The capital investments under this new agreement will help ensure our home at Love Field remains a premier airport with enhancements to the customer experience for years to come.”

Southwest also just implemented its new policy to begin charging a fee for checking bags, after years of touting its policy of allowing passengers to check bags for free. As of May 29, they'll charge $35 for a first checked bag and $45 for a second.
