New Orleans North
Big Easy meets Big D when Aaron Neville and Ellis Marsalis hit UT Arlington
Mardi Gras may have passed us by more than a month ago, but one location will still have a little New Orleans flavor when UT Arlington's College Park Center hosts legendary musicians Aaron Neville and Ellis Marsalis on April 2.
Their appearance is the final event in UT Arlington's 2012-2013 Maverick Speakers Series, a list that has included such people as former astronaut Mark Kelly and wildlife expert Jeff Corwin.
You'd normally pay a pretty penny to be entertained by such legends, but you can see these two for the low, low price of free.
You can expect a little bit of everything when Neville and Marsalis hit the stage, not the least of which is their musical repertoire. Marsalis opens the show, followed by a Q&A with both singers before Neville closes out the evening.
Neville, of course, is the most famous of the Neville Brothers, a family that's been part of the New Orleans fabric for decades.
The 72-year-old singer is famous for songs like "Don't Know Much," a duet with Linda Ronstadt, and "Everybody Plays the Fool." His most recent album, My True Story, is Neville's take on classic doo-wop music that was co-produced by Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.
Marsalis is the patriarch of the family that has begat a host of jazz musicians. A member of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, Marsalis' influence on the jazz world has been immeasurable.
He sired six sons, four of whom became musicians, including Branford and Wynton, two jazz giants in their own right. He's also taught such notables as Terence Blanchard and Harry Connick, Jr.
You'd normally pay a pretty penny for to be entertained by such legends, but you can see these two for the low, low price of free. That's the cost of general admission to College Park Center, although you can also reserve a seat in the first five rows for $25.
All tickets must be reserved by visiting the Maverick Speakers Series site.
