UTA Milestone
University of Texas at Arlington breaks enrollment records
The University of Texas at Arlington is bigger than ever, with fall enrollment reaching an all-time high of nearly 35,000. That's about a 5 percent increase from last year and a 65 percent increase since 2001. UTA is the second-largest campus in the University of Texas system.
Total enrollment, including online classes, could surpass 40,000 students this year. The growth is largely attributed to increased interest in the university's engineering programs. Engineering enrollment has risen 25 percent since 2013, bringing the total number of engineering students to more than 6,000.
Total enrollment, including online classes, could surpass 40,000 students this year.
“We are seeing a rise in demand for engineers in many sectors of our economy,” dean of engineering Khosrow Behbehani said in a release.
“We have worked to increase our outreach to students who are considering engineering, and that has made them aware of the excellent education that they can get at UT Arlington.”
Other areas driving the growth include education, business and nursing; the latter two programs are among the largest at UTA. The university expects nursing enrollment to reach about 12,000 students by the spring.
But UTA isn't only increasing its numbers. It's consistently ranked among the nation's most diverse undergraduate campuses by U.S. News & World Report.
“UT Arlington is the model for the 21st century, urban research university, one that balances academic and teaching excellence with research innovation and leverages technology to increase access to students beyond the campus border,” UTA president Vistasp Karbhari said. “Our students are rising to meet economic demands for a highly educated workforce, especially in areas that meet the needs of Texas and the nation.”
