Long-awaited luxury hotel za-za-zooms into downtown Austin with rooftop bar

Katie Friel
Sep 13, 2019 | 4:47 pm

Okay, so it might have missed that original 2015 deadline, but Hotel ZaZa is finally opening its doors in Austin. The opulent hotelier, which also has locations in Dallas and Houston, announced it finally has checked into the Capital City.

Located just steps from Republic Square Park at 400 Lavaca St., the 159-room ZaZa offers a restaurant, craft cocktail bar, rooftop pool and bar, live entertainment stage, decadent spa, and more than 8,000 square feet of meeting space spread across six separate venues.

"Hotel ZaZa Austin marries big city sophistication with authentic Texas style to create the city’s preeminent luxury hotel," the hotel teases in a release.

Cultivating that big city sophistication/authentic Texas style is Dallas-based Duncan Miller Ullmann, who also designed ZaZa's outposts in Houston and the Big D. In addition to the standard queen and king rooms, the firm was tasked with creating individually themed suites, such as a Palm Spring-inspired Bungalow 6 and the opulent rock ‘n’ roll-themed Back Stage Pass King Suite.

Suite or no suite, every guest is treated to C.O. Bigelow bath products and the hotel's signature candle-lit turndown service.

Austin chef Jacob Weaver, best known for stints at Juliet Italian Kitchen and Asti, is leading the hotel's restaurant program. The property's ground-floor restaurant, Perfect Strangers, offers cocktails; light bites; and a contemporary menu of salads and soups, sandwiches, and entrées, and is open to guests and locals alike.

The seventh floor cocktail bar, the aptly named Group Therapy, is also home to the hotel's live music venue, Stage Fright. (Kudos for these names, ZaZa.) Adjacent to Group Therapy is the poolside Cabana Bar. Speaking of which, the luxury pool boasts views of both the city skyline and Republic Square Park.

Rates for the newly opened Hotel ZaZa Austin begin at $289, and reservations can be made here.

These are the 11 best things to do in Dallas this weekend

Lizzo will play at American Airlines Center on October 29.

This weekend in and around Dallas can almost be split in two. Thursday and early Friday belongs to local arts groups, with the start of three theater productions, one opera, and a symphony concert. But late Friday and Saturday brings in the big guns from both the music and comedy world who will fill up the area's major venues.

Below are the best ways to spend your precious free time this weekend. Want more options? Lucky for you, we have a much longer list of the city's best events.

Thursday, October 27

Lyric Stage presents The Rocky Horror Show
Lyric Stage will celebrate Halloween with the cult classic The Rocky Horror Show. It tells the story of the newly engaged Brad & Janet, who get caught in a storm and find themselves seeking shelter at the eerie mansion of mad scientist, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, where they meet a houseful of wild characters, including a rocking biker, a creepy butler, and a Frankenstein-style muscle man named Rocky. The production runs through Sunday at Majestic Theatre.

Teatro Dallas presents Ashes of Light
Teatro Dallas will present the regional and English premiere of Ashes of Light. After a self-imposed five-year absence, a young man returns home to attend his father's funeral. Over the course of two evenings, mother and son, two estranged generations of Dominicans living in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, attempt to rekindle the love and appreciation for each other and their roots. The production runs through November 12 at Latino Cultural Center.

Ochre House Theater and Dallas Flamenco Festival present Señor Barber
Ochre House Theater and the 2022 Dallas Flamenco Festival will collaborate together for Señor Barber, the captivating tale of two brothers - one a hermit and the other a cobbler - who stand on the precipice as the Devil promises each brother love and fame. Dance, song, and spectacle round out an evening of celebrating Flamenco. The production runs through November 5 at Ochre House Theater.

Friday, October 28

The Dallas Opera presents Hansel and Gretel
The Dallas Opera's second production of its 2022-23 season is an operatic take on a classic fairy tale. Hansel and Gretel head into the forest in search of food - but they almost end up as tasty treats themselves when they start nibbling on the deliciously edible house of a very nasty witch. Music Director Emmanuel Villaume conducts this production from LA Opera, which is sung in English with English supertitles. The production will have four performances through November 5 at Winspear Opera House.

Dallas Symphony Orchestra presents Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets In Concert
Cars fly, trees fight back, and monsters are on the loose in Harry Potter’s second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This concert features Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in high-definition, on a giant screen, while the Dallas Symphony Orchestra performs John Williams’ unforgettable score. There will be three performances through Sunday at Meyerson Symphony Center.

Tauren Wells in concert
Singer Tauren Wells, currently based in Houston, is a rising star in contemporary Christian Music genre. He's released three albums in the past five years, including the new Joy in the Morning, each of which have made the top 5 on Billboard Christian charts. He's also scored collaborations with a variety of big names, including Rascal Flatts, H.E.R., and Kirk Franklin. He'll perform at Texas Trust CU Theatre at Grand Prairie.

TITAS/Dance Unbound presents Nrityagram Ensemble
Nrityagram Ensemble, in collaboration with The Chitrasena Dance Company, is a partnership that celebrates centuries of rich Indian and Sri Lankan cultures. Though steeped in, and dedicated to ancient practices, these artists are committed to carrying Indian and Sri Lankan dance into the 21st century. There will performances on Friday and Saturday at Moody Performance Hall.

Lizzo in concert
The last time Lizzo came to town in 2019, she had just started to make it big after years of striving, and the small venue she played was not indicative of her talent. That won't be the case this time, as Lizzo is now a full-blown superstar. Her new album, Special, is even bigger than her previous one, already yielding the No. 1 song "About Damn Time." She was also both the host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live this past April, a relatively rare honor reserved for only the biggest performers. She'll play at American Airlines Center.

Maren Morris in concert
Country singer Maren Morris is an Arlington native who started her career by playing clubs throughout Dallas-Fort Worth. But she didn't taste true success until she moved to Nashville, scoring with the 2016 album, Hero, and the hit song "My Church." She's gone her own way in her career, crossing over to pop on occasion and standing up for trans rights and other causes. She'll play at The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in support of her new album, Humble Quest.

Saturday, October 29

The Misfits in concert
Punk rock band The Misfits only lasted a short time in their original incarnation, but the music they made influenced bands ranging from Metallica to Green Day to My Chemical Romance. The band, which features singer Glenn Danzig, bassist Jerry Only, and guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, feuded through the years, but since 2016 they've been back together as The Original Misfits. They'll play their only headlining show of 2022 at Dos Equis Pavilion, with Alice Cooper as special guest.

Ron White in concert
Comedian Ron "Tater Salad" White, who first rose to fame as the cigar-smoking, scotch-drinking funnyman from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour phenomenon, has long since established himself as a star in his own right. Over the past 20 years, White has been one of the top-grossing stand up comedians on tour in the country. He'll perform two shows on Saturday at The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Irving.

Only one Dallas restaurant has earned prestigious 5 diamond award from AAA

Carte Blanche
Carte Blanche

They specialize in tastings.

A Dallas restaurant has racked up a prestigious award, the only restaurant in Texas to do so: Carte Blanche, the acclaimed fine-dining tasting restaurant on Greenville Avenue from husband-and-wife Casey and Amy LaRue, has earned the coveted AAA Five Diamond designation, ranking them among a select group of restaurants offering leading-edge cuisine, ingredients, and preparation, as well as service and atmosphere considered to be extraordinary.

The Five Diamond ranking puts Carte Blanche in the same field as nationally renowned restaurants such as Le Bernardin, Jean-Georges Restaurant, Per Se, The French Laundry, Joel Robuchon in Las Vegas, and Restaurant Guy Savoy at Caesars Palace.

Only 50 restaurants in the U.S. currently have Five Diamond rankings.

By comparison, the next ranking down is Four Diamonds, which only three Dallas restaurants, also acclaimed, have achieved: Fearing's, Hotel St. Germain, and Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek. Dallas also has 24 Three Diamonds including Al Biernat's, Boulevardier, José, Pappas Bros. Steakhouse, Nobu, and Tei An.

Evaluations are conducted anonymously by AAA inspectors, who review more than 32,000 restaurants every year. Casey LaRue says they received no warning and had no idea when the inspectors paid a visit.

Carte Blanche scored an impressive total of 50.3 points out of a potential 59, earning praise for its cleanliness, "fresh and inviting" ambience, "expert wine service" and "cuisine [that] "showed skill and creativity."

The restaurant was lauded for its "exclusively fresh, local/regional/artisanal items" such as boar, Texas elk, and wild mushrooms; as well as its "expert techniques," "imaginative, creative menus," creative presentations, and "perfectly sized portions."

Service was deemed cordial, knowledgeable, efficient, and non-obtrusive, with a sommelier who was engaging and attentive, with very good wine knowledge by all staff.

AAA established its Diamond program to help highlight the best in hotels and dining. To make the list, establishments must meet certain standards, cleanliness, comfort, and hospitality.

Previously, AAA announced a new list every spring, in time for summer travel. But they skipped a year during the pandemic and a spokesperson says they're reconfiguring their approach.

"Typically, it has been once per year but we are in the process of revamping that and rolling out a new strategy for 2023," the spokesperson says. "It will likely be more frequently – perhaps monthly."

Since opening in 2020, Carte Blanche has earned an unprecedented round of awards including scoring 5 stars in the prestigious 2022 Star Awards from Forbes Travel Guide, one of only three properties in Texas and the only restaurant to do so. The restaurant was a finalist for CultureMap's Best New Restaurant in 2022, and madeTexas Monthly's annual best list for 2022.

Casey LaRue was a finalist for Best Chef of the Year in CultureMap's 2022 annual Tastemaker Awards. Amy LaRue was nominated for Best Pastry Chef in 2021 and won Pastry Chef of the Year at the Tastemaker Awards in 2022.

While we're here, a new menu
Ever ambitious, the couple recently initiated a restructuring of the menu at Carte Blanche.

"We are always changing individual dishes constantly but this is the biggest single change since opening," Casey says. "It's hard to make drastic changes — there's a flow to the day and everything goes smoothly, which has made me hesitant to mess with it. But we wanted to try a new approach."

They're now offering a full 15-course tasting menu they've broken down into themes such as The Garden, Ocean, Texas Game, and Dessert.

Current dishes include

  • Smoked Boar Empanada with coal-roasted sweet potatoes, Persimmon, Sugar Rush Pepper Puree, and Collards
  • Burrata with Smoked Vegetables and Shaved Squash
  • Venison Tartare with caviar, creme fraiche, and smoked coffee oil

They also offer smaller 4- and 6-course menus which can be modified according to guests' wishes, including a vegetarian option with dishes such as Smoked Beets with grapefruit and puffed barley.

"The 15 courses do not include the amuse or mignardises, which adds another 10 or so 'bites'," he says. "It's carefully thought out, I really watch how much carbs and fat are spread throughout the meal so guests can finish the experience."

The Good Nurse flatlines as a great serial killer movie despite Oscar-winning stars

Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain in The Good Nurse

It could be argued that American audiences and content makers have an uncomfortable obsession with serial killers. That fixation has only grown through the years with the proliferation of true crime podcasts and streaming shows, each of which has returned to mass murderers repeatedly. A relatively recent killer with an unusual method is showcased in the new Netflix film, The Good Nurse.

But anyone expected a dark and gritty film may be disappointed, as the film shifts focus from the killer, Charlie Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), to one of his co-workers, Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain). A nurse at Parkfield Memorial Hospital in New Jersey in 2003, she becomes quick friends with Charlie after he starts there as a night nurse.

Their bond, one which becomes tighter after Charlie helps hide the fact that Amy has a debilitating heart condition, keeps her from understanding that Charlie is killing patients, poisoning them by injecting insulin into random IV bags in the hospital’s storage room. It’s only when an internal hospital investigation triggers a police inquiry led by detectives Tim Braun (Noah Emmerich) and Danny Baldwin (Nnamdi Asomugha) that Amy starts to have her doubts.

Directed by Tobias Lindholm and written by Kristy Wilson-Cairns, the film is well done, but never achieves the gravitas that would transform it into something great. Part of this is because the filmmakers never show Charlie as having any outward signs of being evil. He has a bland niceness about him that conceals his lurid impulses; that’s an effective way of showing that you can never know what’s happening in another person’s mind, but an ineffective way of building drama in a film.

The telegraphed nature of Amy and Charlie’s friendship takes on the feel of a slightly higher-class Lifetime movie, one that doesn’t quite fit the expectations brought by two Oscar winners in the lead roles. What ends up being more compelling is the hospital administrators, led by Linda Garran (Kim Dickens), covering up Charlie’s crimes for unknown reasons, and the doggedness of the two detectives trying to discover what exactly is happening.

On another note that’s admittedly a minor quibble, the film’s title does the story no favors. Using The Good… as the start of a title is a vastly overused crutch. Recent examples on both TV and in movies have included The Good Doctor, The Good Fight, The Good Wife, The Good Place, The Good Boss, and The Good House. Sometimes a film can overcome the plainness of such a title, but The Good Nurse is hampered by it.

Chastain and Redmayne each give respectable performances, but they’re nowhere near the award-worthy ones they’ve put on in the past. The most notable actor in the film winds up being Asomugha, a former NFL player who’s been inching into the entertainment industry over the past decade. He’s flat-out great in this role and could use it as a springboard to bigger and better parts.

The Good Nurse has its fair share of interesting moments and accomplished actors to bring them to life, but it falls short of being a must-watch. It’s a serial killer movie that mostly omits the killing, taking most of its reason for being with it.
