    TEDxSMU Lineup Revealed

TEDxSMU 2014 speakers include rock 'n' roll insiders, superbug scientists and flamenco dancers

    Claire St. Amant
    Sep 17, 2014 | 1:47 pm

Big idea conference TEDxSMU has announced its 2014 speaker lineup. The selection of scholars, performers and musicians will offer their take on the theme "Strangely Familiar" on November 1 at Dallas City Performance Hall.

The day-long conference begins at 9 am and runs until 6 pm. Breakfast and lunch are provided, along with ample breaks conducive to conversations. Tickets, which cost $150 and include access to the after-party, can be purchased online.

Now in its sixth year, TEDxSMU has morphed into much more than merely a one-day experience.

“Whatever we thought we were starting with TEDxSMU in 2009, we know now that it has been the catalyst for an entire community of people who are looking for new ways to view the world,” director Heather Hankamer said in a release.

In addition to the signature annual conference, TEDxSMU holds idea salons throughout the year. Plus, Hankamer said the open auditions for a spot in the main conference and TEDxKids@SMU “have taken on a life of their own” and are increasingly popular.

“The sense of adventure we felt that first year just keeps going,” she said.

Six innovative female founders from greater Dallas have been recognized by Inc. Magazine for leading their industries forward.

The women were named to Inc.'s Female Founders 500 list, which features female entrepreneurs based in the U.S. The group attracted approximately $9 billion in 2024 revenue and $10.6 billion in funding, according to Inc.

“Female founders know what struggle is, but they’re also experts of improvisation, adaptability, and creativity. The women featured on this year’s list exemplify these qualities," Diana Ransom, Inc. executive editor said in a release. "Through times of uncertainty, their unwavering dedication and steadfast leadership are not only inspiring but vital to driving progress.”

The Dallas honorees represent industries ranging from content creation software to custom garden kits to bakeries.

Here are the Dallas-area founders, their companies, and why Inc. says they chose them:

Amber Capone, Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions (Southlake). "For partnering with Stanford University on a study about Ibogaine therapy in veterans with traumatic brain injury, and premiering a documentary on psychedelic-assisted therapy at the Telluride Film Festival."

Amber Venz Box, LTK. "For helping content creators build their own businesses by developing a platform that drives $5 billion in purchases annually with more than 40 million monthly shoppers."

Donna Letier, Gardenuity. "For delivering wellness-focused customized gardening kits and experiences to consumers and businesses nationwide, securing $5.5 million in funding and growing its corporate wellness platform by 300 percent."

Susan Sarich, SusieCakes. "For opening five new bakeries, including two in new markets, increasing sales through marketing campaigns tied to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour and Wicked, and launching a new loyalty program app that has grown memberships by 50 percent."

Suzanne Miller, SPM Communications. "For overcoming economic hurdles and leading this long-running marketing and PR agency to replace nearly $1 million in lost business."

Tera Davis, CyberOne Security (Plano). "For transitioning the company to women-led and women-owned, adding 36 new customers and hiring more than two dozen cybersecurity professionals."

In all, 28 Texas female founders made this list. See the full list of winners here.
