News of the World squanders chance to tell unique Western story

Alex Bentley
Dec 18, 2020 | 12:31 pm

The last time Tom Hanks teamed up with writer/director Paul Greengrass, it led to one of his best performances in Captain Phillips. That film was based on a real story where the stakes couldn’t have been higher for Hanks’ titular character. Their latest collaboration, News of the World, is fictional, but continues on that theme of life-or-death situations.

Hanks plays Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a former soldier who makes a living in post-Civil War America by traveling from town to town reading news from various papers across the country to interested audiences. It’s during one of his trips in Texas that he encounters Johanna (Helena Zengel), a young girl he discovers had been kidnapped by members of the Kiowa tribe for six years. In the process of being returned to her family, her wagon was ambushed, leaving her all alone.

With no good options for anyone else to take her to her aunt and uncle in Castroville, Texas, Kidd decides to take on the responsibility himself. Having essentially been raised Kiowa, Johanna only speaks their language, and their journey is spent with the two of them trying to figure out how to communicate, as well as fend off the many dangers of life in the Old West.

Based on the novel by Paulette Jiles, the film (co-written by Luke Davies) is relatively straightforward, perhaps too much so. The story starts off interesting, as the idea of a man entertaining others just by reading the news paired with a girl with whom he has almost no way to talk is intriguing. Indeed, it’s their “conversations” that comprise some of the best moments of the film, as the two constantly feel each other out and bond over unspoken sentiments.

It’s when the movie transitions into genre stereotypes that it starts to falter a bit. Although Kidd is not a character typical of Westerns, the story relies on a variety of Western tropes to move it along. One of the main action sequences in the film becomes close to laughable as Kidd and Johanna try to escape a trio of bad guys. A pursuit that starts off late at night finishes in the bright sunshine for seemingly no reason; thankfully, the gun battle at its end makes up for the logical fallacy.

What the film never seems to want to wrestle with is difficult topics like festering Civil War sentiments or relations between Native Americans and white settlers. Kidd is a voice of reason who seems to know how to ingratiate himself to any crowd, but his calming presence helps Greengrass elide the film’s thorny issues when they briefly arise.

The character of Kidd fits right in with Hanks’ reputation for playing nice guys, but, as always, he brings more to the table than might be apparent on the surface. Kidd has a bit of a tortured history, and that sadness can be read on Hanks' face throughout, whether the scene involves Kidd's past or not. Zengel, a German actress, plays Johanna as both feral and innocent, and she hits the right notes 99 percent of the time.

Greengrass is known for his verisimilitude in his docudramas and the Bourne series, but he misses the mark a bit with News of the World. The relationship between Kidd and Johanna is of paramount importance in this film; any big Western flourishes should have been secondary to that part.

The top 8 singles players posed with the trophy at Fort Worth's Hotel Drover.

It's not as famous as Wimbledon or the US Open, but the WTA Finals will crown a new queen of the women's pro tennis tour in North Texas this week - and all are invited to court.

For the first time, Fort Worth hosts the prestigious year-end finale for the WTA, featuring the top eight singles players and doubles teams in the world. Singles players vying for title, and their rankings, are:

No. 1 Iga Swiatek (Poland)
No. 2 Ons Jabeur (Tunisia)
No 3 Jessica Pegula (United States)
No. 4 Coco Gauff (United States)
No. 5 Maria Sakkari (Greece)
No. 6 Caroline Garcia (France)
No. 7Aryna Sabalenka*
No. 8 Daria Kasatkina*

U.S. superstars Gauff and Pegula are also competing in doubles.

The "round robin"-style competition will take place October 31-November 7 at Dickies Arena, and tickets start at $20.

The prestigious year-end finale has been moved to Fort Worth from Shenzhen, China, for one year only, WTA officials say. It's the first time the contest has been staged in North Texas, and the first time it's in the United States in 17 years. The total prize money pool is $5 million.

Players assembled at Fort Worth's Hotel Drover for a celebration and "draw party" on Friday, October 28. (More on the groupings, draws, and prize money each player picks up throughout each round here.)

Each day in the first rounds, play starts at 3 pm, and both singles and doubles matches will be played. Friday through Sunday, play begins at 1:30 pm. The finals in both doubles and singles will take place at 5:30 pm and 8 pm respectively, Monday, November 7.

The initial order of play, on October 31 and November 1 is:

Monday, October 31
3 pm:
(1) Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic) & Katerina Siniakova (Czech Republic) vs (8) Desirae Krawczyk (USA) & Demi Schuurs (Netherlands)
Not before 5 pm:
(3) Jessica Pegula (USA) vs (5) Maria Sakkari (Greece)
Not before 7 pm:
(2) Ons Jabeur (Tunisia) vs (7) Aryna Sabalenka
Followed by:
(3) Coco Gauff (USA) & Jessica Pegula (USA) vs (6) Yifan Xu (China) & Zhaoxuan Yang (China)

Tuesday, November 1
3 pm:
(4) Veronika Kudermetova & Elise Mertens (Belgium) vs (5) Lyudmyla Kichenok (Ukraine) & Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia)
Not Before 5 pm:
(1) Iga Swiatek (Poland) vs (8) Daria Kasatkina
Not before 7 pm:
(4) Coco Gauff (USA) vs (6) Caroline Garcia (France)
Followed by:
(2) Gabriela Dabrowski (Canada) & Giuliana Olmos (Mexico) vs (7) Anna Danilina (Kazakhstan) & Beatriz Haddad Maia (Brazil)

"I’m super excited to be in the finals," says top-ranked Swiatek. "I feel like it’s a celebration of what we’ve done in the past year. I’m just proud to be here."

The eyes of the tennis world will be on DFW, too. According to NBC5, the matches will be broadcast in 160 countries to a projected viewing audience of 900 million people. Find coverage at tennischannel.com.

To keep up with the tournament, follow WTA on Facebook or visit the website.

These are the 8 best food and drink events in Dallas this week

Celestina Blok
Oct 31, 2022 | 3:38 pm
Koulourakia at Greek Food Festival of Dallas
Greek Food Festival of Dallas Facebook

Get authentic pastries like this koulourakia at the Greek Food Festival of Dallas.

Halloween is over but Dia de los Muertos festivities are still in full force this week. Events include a multi-course dinner, tequila mixology class, and family-friendly festival. Speaking of festivals, the week ends with two big ones: one highlighting Greek food and culture and another featuring some of the country’s best pitmasters. Both are three days long, so pace yourself.

Tuesday, November 1

Dia de los Muertos Garland
This family-friendly, free event will celebrate the lives of loved ones lost with mariachi performances and ballet folklorico dancers in Mexican tradition. An array of food trucks and vendors will serve tacos, churros, Mexican sweet bread, fruit bowls with spicy Tajin, and more. The event will take place at the Granville Arts Center and begins at 5:30 pm.

Wednesday, November 2

Dia de los Muertos Dinner at Roots Southern Table
Chef Tiffany Derry will welcome guest chefs Mauricio Lopez and Ana Martinez from Hilton Los Cabos beach resort to collaborate a five-course, Baja-inspired dinner to honor lost loved ones for the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos. Each course will come with chef-curated tequila pairings. Dinner is $175 per person and begins at 6 pm.

Day of the Dead - Return of Blackswan Saloon
For one night only, defunct Deep Ellum bar Blackswan Saloon will return from the dead to serve up its former glory at Midnight Rambler at the Hotel Joule downtown. Blackswan was the bar owned by Gabe Sanchez, who is now Midnight Rambler's general manager, so it's not such a stretch, but anticipate some throwback infused drinks. 6 pm-12 am.

Thursday, November 3

Day of the Dead Mixology Class at Seisegundos
Seisegundos is Mi Cocina’s upscale second floor cocktail bar that overlooks McKinney Avenue, and it’ll be the site for this Day of the Dead-themed mixology class featuring Casamigos tequila. Participants will get to taste four varieties of the popular tequila brand and learn to create seasonal cocktails. The $40 per-person price includes light bites from the bar. Class will run from 5:30-7 pm.

Friday, November 4

Greek Food Festival of Dallas
This three-day celebration of Greek culture and cuisine will return to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, where guests can enjoy music and dance and authentic Greek dishes. Bring the family for kids’ activities, and don’t miss the marketplace. Admission is $10 for adults and complimentary for kids 10 and under. The festival will run from 11 am-10 pm Friday and Saturday, and 11 am-5 pm on Sunday.

Q BBQ Fest
To be held at AT&T Stadium’s Miller Lite House, this three-day national competition among pitmasters features six that are native Texans. The lineup includes Barrett Black of Black’s BBQ, Brandon Hurtado of Hurtado Barbecue, Mike Perez of Loro, and more Tickets range from $15 for general admission (food and drink are available for purchase) to $119 for unlimited barbecue, cocktails, and beer. There’ll also be live music. All tickets include parking and must be purchased for specific timeslots. The event will run through Sunday.

Saturday, November 5

Drink North Texas Wine Festival at The Sound at Cypress Waters
Wine festival features 18 award-winning Texas wineries from the North Texas Wine Country. Sip and savor the best North Texas wines at the beautiful Sound overlooking North Lake. Along with the vineyards, there will be artisan vendors selling handmade goods, and Petty Theft will close out the event with a performance at the Rogers-O’Brien Amphitheater. 12-7pm.

Morton’s The Steakhouse A Taste of Legends Wine Dinner
Five-course dinner paired with hand-selected bottles of wines from five of the most distinguished French wine regions to perfectly complement the meal. Courses include Brie butter brioche toast, tuna niçoise salad, Prime New York strip, beef short rib, and French artisan cheeses, paired with Champagne Delamotte Brut, Château Miraval Rosé, Domaine Matrot Meursault Rouge, Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2006, and Cyprès de Climens Barsac. $179. 6:30 pm. Reservations online.

News You Can Eat

Savor the flavor of autumn-themed dishes in this Dallas restaurant news

Teresa Gubbins
Oct 31, 2022 | 11:22 am
butternut squash polenta
North Italia

Fall is on the menu with butternut squash polenta.

This roundup of Dallas dining news is all about new menus and new dishes to try. There are vegan dishes, happy hour menus, new fall offerings, new salads, new drinks, and a famous fast-food BBQ item, a collection of items pulled from press releases and online sources.

Here's what's happening in Dallas restaurant news:

Fatburger and its sister brand Buffalo’s Express opened in Garland. The California-based chain that's a Hollywood celeb favorite is known for juicy, built-to-order burgers weighing one-third of a pound, heftier than the typical fast-food patty, with more of a hand-formed appearance. It debuted in Texas in 2020 with a location in North Richland Hills and two others have since opened: One in Arlington and one in Allen, opened by Alfredo Gonzalez who also opened this new Garland location.

Oak Cliff Burrito Company is a pop-up inside Trompo, the recently opened restaurant at Jefferson Tower from Luis Olvera, serving burritos, nachos, and bowls from 11 am-2 pm. It's camping out at Trompo until it moves to a more permanent location at 626 W. Davis St. There are regular burritos, smothered burritos, and burritos smothered with nachos. Order online for pickup at Trompo, or via Doordash and Uber Eats

Katy Trail Ice House in Uptown is expanding. Ray Washburne, who is one of the partners who knew, announced they will be turning the former Asel Art Supply building into an indoor space called Katy Trail Depot.

Loro Dallas has new fall dishes Thai Peanuts, Smoked Three Bean Salad, Green Curry Beignets, Caramelized Onion-Cheddar Burger, Beer Battered Cod Sandwich with pickles & caraway slaw, and Key Lime Pie, priced from $4.50 to $13.50.

Libertine Bar on Greenville Avenue has new Happy Hour specials including Loaded Skillet Queso with carnitas, sour cream & guacamole, Soft Pretzel with beer cheese & mustard, Kettle Chips with onion dip, Chicken Bites with honey mustard, and a 44 Farms Double Cheese Burger with American cheese and pickle-fries, from $2.50 to $7.50. All bottles of wine are half price. Frozen drinks including margaritas & Frose are $5, and some draft beer are $5.

Swizzle, the tiki-themed bar at 1802 Greenville Ave., is now open 7 days a week, meaning you can visit on Mondays and Tuesdays, as well as the rest of the week.

IPIC Fairview is testing out new vegan options including vegan nachos grand with tortilla chips, black bean spread, vegan shredded mozzarella, vegan queso, vegan sour cream, guacamole, and jalapeños; a vegan supreme pizza with vegan shredded mozzarella, Impossible rumbles, pepper & onion, mushroom, red onion, and tomato. They also have a special cocktail for the fall: Autumn Apple Falls cocktail with apple cinnamon-infused vodka, ginger syrup, lemon, agave, and bitters with a cinnamon sugar rim.

Spitz Frisco, which does a healthy modern take on Mediterranean, Greek, & American foods including wraps, salads, gyros, bowls, falafel, hummus, pita, and fries, is spotlighting its vegan menu, with a separate tab on its website listing wraps with hummus and crispy garbanzos, and a “Medi bowl” with falafel, dill quinoa, hummus, tomato, cucumber, olives, lemon-herb tahini, crispy garbanzos, and za’atar. It’s a nice effort although some of the items have ingredients like feta cheese, so it would appear that they might not know exactly what “vegan” means (it means, no animal products, and that would include cheese). Founded in Utah, Spitz has locations in California, Colorado, Oregon, Minnesota, and now Texas, and opened in Frisco in September.

North Italia has a new fall/winter menu featuring seasonal ingredients such as butternut squash, fuji apple, figs, rainbow cauliflower, and hazelnut, such as Butternut Squash Annolini, Roasted Porchetta, Short Rib Lumache pasta, and Crispy Eggplant Parmesan, plus seasonal cocktails like the Barbarini Smash and the Black Fig Manhattan cocktail.

Firehouse Subs has a new Prime Rib Steak Sub, featuring prime rib cooked sous vide, topped with caramelized onions, provolone, lettuce, tomato, garlic aioli, and mustard on a toasted sub roll.
