Lily Tomlin on being America's craziest mom and never retiring beloved old characters

    Tyler Rudick
    Feb 9, 2013 | 9:33 am

After nearly five decades in the biz, legendary actress and comedian Lily Tomlin is busier than ever. She plays two TV moms: Reba McEntire's on Malibu Country and Lisa Kudrow's on Web Therapy. She's also cast as a 1960-era radical feminist alongside Tina Fey in the forthcoming film Admission. Just days ago, she made a special appearance on NBC's televised birthday bash for Betty White.

How Tomlin is squeezing in two one-woman performances this weekend in Houston and Dallas is anyone's guess.

"Ever since Laugh-In, I don't think I've ever stopped touring," she says. "People often ask when the tour started, but it's been going on for decades. I play a number of dates every year, depending on what other projects are happening."

"Ernestine hasn't worked for the phone company since the divestiture, but she's had lots of jobs," Tomlin says. "She had a chat show for a while."

Although her current Malibu County gig has cut into the perpetual touring schedule, Tomlin says the experience has been worth reshuffling her live appearances.

"I absolutely love working with everyone on the show. We're truly a TV family," she says. "Sometimes I do feel like Reba's my daughter. Later this season, we're having Blake Shelton guest star as my son, which means I end up having two pretty hot kids."

Along with her recurring role on Web Therapy as Putsy Hodge — Lisa Kudrow's mother, who is undergoing "sock therapy" — Tomlin jokes that she's discovered a whole new side of her career.

"I kind of specialize in TV moms now," she says, laughing. "I can even play your mom, if you like. Seriously, I'm getting very good at it."

Tomlin performs a dozen of her most noted characters this weekend, running through everyone from precocious 6-year-old Edith Ann (yup, on the big chair) to pesky phone operator Ernestine.

"Unless they stop having anything relevant to say, I'll never retire these characters," Tomlin says about subtle social commentary infused in each of her skits.

"Ernestine hasn't worked for the phone company since the divestiture, but she's had lots of jobs. She had a chat show for a while and then served in the second Bush Administration. She even tried to broker peace between W. and Saddam Hussein once — Kim Jong Il too.

"She's just drawn to power, really. These days she works for an insurance corporation, which gives her a chance to reject people's health care. It's safe to say that Ernestine stays busy."

Construction theme park developed with Dude Perfect digs into Grapevine

A new kind of entertainment experience is bulldozing into Grapevine: Called Dig World, it's a construction-themed adventure park that will open at 2200 W. Grapevine Mills Cir. at Grapevine Mills.

According to a release, the park will open in early 2026.

This will be the second location of Dig World, following the first location in Katy, just outside of Houston, which opened in March 2022. It's not the only concept to turn construction into an amusement; a concept called Extreme Sandbox opened in Sachse in 2020, but they closed in 2023 with plans to reboot.

The park allows families to safely operate full-size construction equipment in a hands-on, kid-friendly environment. Their main attractions feature excavator digs, mini pond fishing, a UTV course, skid steer track, and a 40-foot boom lift.

The Grapevine Mills location also features exclusive attractions developed in partnership with Dude Perfect, the media brand known for their trick shot videos, including construction-themed trick-shot stations and interactive family challenges.

“Grapevine Mills has become a premier destination for immersive entertainment, from Meow Wolf to Legoland Discovery Center, to adventures at The Escape Game," says General Manager at Grapevine Mills Joe Szymaszek in a statement. "We’re thrilled to welcome Dig World to the mix as it brings a whole new level of hands-on, family-friendly fun to our center.”

Tickets for the park start at $30 for two hours, and there are annual pass memberships that start at $50.

Dig World was founded by Jacob Robinson, his college friend Rick Bennett, and Alex Carroll in 2022. Robinson’s son Pierce lives with significant special needs due to suffering from bacterial meningitis, and has always been mesmerized by construction equipment. That inspired Robinson’s vision of the park.

The founders were recently featured on Shark Tank, which put the company on a national stage and earned them a deal with one of the sharks: Robert Herjavec. Herjavec agreed to give Dig World a $200,000 investment in exchange for 10 percent equity.

“As a lifelong builder and entrepreneur, I couldn’t be more excited to launch Dig World in my hometown of DFW,” says co-founder Alex Carroll in a statement. “We’re combining real machinery, creative play, and the power of partnership with Dude Perfect to create an unforgettable experience for families.”
