Simultaneously shaping and redefining the French New Wave, Jean-Luc Godard’s Contempt is a purely unique depiction of a faltering marriage. The film follows Paul (Michel Piccoli) and Camille (Bridgitte Bardot) through a maze of dialogue that unceasingly broadens their emotional rift. Godard’s first big-budget production explores beauty and communication framed by the director’s unease with the state of the filmmaking industry. Vivid colors and cinematography reinforce Godard’s visual masterpiece, which celebrates 50 years of challenging audiences with a brand new restoration.
