The 2014 Fort Worth Opera Festival will present With Blood, With Ink. A renowned theologian, poetess, and champion of women’s rights, Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz was a woman before her time. However, restricted by some powerful superiors of her era, the revered intellectual was forced by the Inquisition to sign a blood oath renouncing her life’s work. As she lays dying, Sor Juana is plagued by visions of her younger self and recalls the many people and circumstances responsible for her fateful renunciation. From child prodigy to silenced free-thinker, she struggles to reconcile with her past. Based on the powerful true story of this 17th century nun, With Blood, With Ink shines a light on the life and work of this inspiring yet tragic and enigmatic figure.
