The dancers of Avant Chamber Ballet and the singers of Verdigris Ensemble will bring to life David Lang’s choral setting of the Hans Christian Andersen story. This will be the first time a contemporary choral work will be staged with ballet in Dallas. The ballet will be choreographed by Avant Chamber Ballet artistic director Katie Cooper.

Lang is one of the most highly-esteemed and performed American composers writing today. Lang’s The Little Matchgirl Passion won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Music. Commissioned by Carnegie Hall and based on a fable by Hans Christian Andersen and Lang’s own rewriting of the libretto to Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, the recording of the piece was awarded a 2010 Grammy Award for Best Small Ensemble Performance.

Opening the program is The Nutcracker Suite choreographed by Katie Cooper and Paul Mejia with live music by Cezanne Quartet. The ballet presents favorite excerpts of Tchaikovsky’s "The Nutcracker" with full costumes and staging.
