Bruce Wood Dance Project will present 5 Years, which opens with Requiem, Wood’s unconventional interpretation of Mozart’s unfinished Requiem. Having debuted on January 22, 2003 at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, this daring masterpiece swells with breathtaking images and restrained power. Requiem has only been performed once, as the third work of the evening-long program of Maestros.
Albert Drake choreographs his first world premiere for BWDP, "Whispers." This ensemble work is currently untitled and set to a mash-up of music from J. Cole, Max Richter, Steve Reich, and Peter Broderick. Drake draws from his rich experiences as a performer and is creating an emotionally charged, kinetic piece about living life in gratitude.
The evening reaches a climax with Polyester Dreams, Wood’s triumphant tribute to the music and culture of the '70s. Debuted on July 14, 2002 at Bass Performance Hall, Polyester Dreams was the finnal installment of Wood’s trilogy, Culture Shock. Polyester Dreams is set to the '70s music of Gladys Knight, Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, among other pop stars.
5 Years will touch your hearts with unexpected drama, amazing athleticism, and innovative artistry. Since Bruce Wood’s passing last year, the company has forged ahead––galvanized by his spirit, discipline and aesthetic. Under the leadership of Nikaidoh, BWDP channels the momentum into new works, new dancers, high-caliber productions, and by shining the light on Wood’s unforgettable repertoire.
