Cara Mía Theatre will present a screening of the play Crystal City 1969. The screening celebrates the launch of the play for distribution to schools during the 2023-2024 school year.
Amidst controversy over ethnic studies in Texas public schools, Dallas ISD instructor Andrew Ayala will host a discussion after the screening, "Our Stories in Schools: Bridging the Gap with Ethnic Studies," with organizers of the famous Crystal City walkout and educational revolution, including Dr. José Angel Gutiérrez, Diana Serna Aguilera, and Mario Treviño.
David Lozano and Raul Treviño’s play is based on the true story of Mexican-American teenagers who walked out of class and into civil rights history, as they protested punishment for speaking Spanish on campus and fought for bicultural education representing Mexican and Mexican-Americans who comprised the majority of the town.
