Cohn Drennan Contemporary presents Dan Allen: scrapbook opening reception

eventdetail

Cohn Drennan Contemporary will present the book release and documentary photography exhibition of scrapbook, a portrait of Texas counterculture from 1982 to 2002 by Dan Allen.

In an homage and recognition of the history of the gallery’s new location in Expo Park, scrapbook is a portrait of the denizens who populated the venues of punk, rock-a-billy, gothic, riot girl, dance clubs and even dungeon performance art. Allen’s book is important because it doesn’t focus solely on the clubs and bands, but is an encyclopedia of the fashions and people who created and participated in the initial onslaught and ensuing progression of Texas’ counterculture.

The large format black and white photos were taken in Dallas and Austin in the 1980s and 1990s, and were decades in the making. Chances are that someone you know, or their grandparents, are included in the documentation.

Following the opening reception, the exhibit will be on display through June 21.
