Conduit Gallery will present a show of work by emerging South African artists curated by Laurie Ann Farrell in conjunction with Spier Arts Trust’s Creative Block Initiative.
"Umbhiyozo" means "celebration" in Xhosa, one of the eleven South African languages. The many and varied small works in this exhibition come from the Creative Block Initiative, administered by the Spier Arts Trust in Cape Town, South Africa. Each unique piece represents the individual stories, subject matter and style of one of more than 250 participating artists.
Artists who join the program receive blank blocks to create unique artworks. The program offers original and reasonably priced South African artworks while supporting artists early on in their careers. The Spier Arts Trust team mentors these emerging artists and acquires selected blocks. Some are curated into the Nando’s Art Collection, others are made available for purchase.
Following the opening reception, the exhibit will be on view through December 30.
