Jules Buck Jones creates menageries, places that swirl with biodiversity and animal life. In this exhibition, the artist will wrap the walls with black and white illustrations of brush and bramble, with charcoal drawings of the birds of North America hovering throughout the installation. Following the artist’s tradition of illustrating the taxonomies of the animal kingdom, this special presentation in the gallery’s project room will feature many noble birds native to the continent that we call home, in celebration of their natural beauty.
Jones creates art inspired by the mechanics and mysteries of the natural world. His body of work ranges from dense, organic watercolors and drawings, to large-scale performances employing costumes and puppetry. He is a founding member of the collective, non-profit, MASS Gallery and the art/science collective Animal Facts Club, both located in Austin, Texas. Jules has been accepted and invited to art residencies in Maine, New York, Tennessee, Vermont, the Florida Everglades, and Barcelona. He shows extensively throughout Texas with solo exhibitions and has representation in Austin, Dallas, and Houston. Jules currently teaches painting and drawing at Texas State University in San Marcos and recently received the Makers Muse Award from New Mexico’s Kindle Project and just completed a large commission for the new Line Hotel in downtown Austin. In spring of 2019, a monograph publication of his work was published by Cattywampus Press in conjunction with a solo exhibition at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont.
Following the opening reception, the exhibit will be on view through February 22.
