Dallas Black Dance Theatre will present the 17th Annual DanceAfrica, an event that features powerful movements and heart-searing drumming, allowing African culture to flow through the music and dance of DBDT and DBDT: Encore!, along with the Allegro Performing Ensemble, the Senior Performing Ensemble, and the Junior Performing Ensemble of Dallas Black Dance Academy.
Guest artist Giwayen Mata is an all-sistah, dance, percussion, and vocal ensemble presenting dynamic songs of the African Diaspora. The prestigious Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts Dance Conservatory will present fierce movement in dedication to the female elders of the community.
The DeSoto A Cappella Choir and Varsity Women will perform a tapestry of inspiring songs that capture the spirit of African traditions.
Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s annual DanceAfrica festival is back for its 19th year. Themed “Voices of the Drum: Echoes of Unity,” this year’s celebration aims to encapsulate the powerful connection between music, dance, and community.
The celebration will feature a full week of events across the Arts District, with performances from all five of DBDT’s dance companies – Dallas Black Dance Theatre, DBDT: Encore! and Dallas Black Dance Academy’s Junior Performing Ensemble, Senior Performing Ensemble and Allegro – plus special guests performers, Ayodele Drum & Dance and Voices of Empowerment choir, directed by the Grammy Award-winning Pamela Dawson.
The main event takes place on October 11 and 12 at Moody Performance Hall, when all the performers take the stage for a multigenerational celebration that highlights African heritage and the shared foundation of rhythm and drums that unites us all. Following the performance, patrons can enjoy the annual Bantaba where the dancers, audience, and drummers will present a communal dance experience.
In addition to the evening performances, October 12 will feature a free family-friendly outdoor festival and marketplace at Klyde Warren Park from 10 am-2 pm. The festival will feature a variety of vendors, food trucks, and performances by an array of performance groups. There will also be a children’s activity center.
