In his influential work "Ars Poetica," or The Art of Poetry (19 BCE), the Roman poet Horace advised his fellow poets to blend sweetness and usefulness (dulce et utile), in order both to delight and to instruct the reader.

Horace’s famous formula might also apply to the Institute’s Friday Night Salon, during which we come together in a circle for civil discourse about important and interesting topics, whether from art, history, philosophy, literature, or the daily news.

Learn from each other in a generous exchange of knowledge and informed opinion, listening to, questioning, agreeing or disagreeing with fellow “salonistas." The discussion will be moderated by Dr. J. Larry Allums.
