An epic romance about an untenable love affair, Laurence Anyways centers on the tortured relationship between Laurence, a writer and teacher, and his girlfriend Fred, a line producer on film productions. As the film opens, the couple is tightly-knit, largely because of their disdain for the rest of humanity. It’s a more or less charmed existence—until Laurence confesses that he believes he’s a woman trapped in a man’s body.

A chance encounter with another transgendered person leads Laurence into a new world of possibilities, while the two try to decide how they can stay together when society, and biology, is pushing them apart.
