With roots as a visual art project, "Windtopia" has evolved into a collaboration among artists across the visual arts, sound art, graphic design, creative writing, and performance and non-artists in fields such as engineering and climate science. Drawing on each member’s expertise, Mark Chen’s vision of our complex energy future is brought to life.
At first glance, a future world powered by 100 percent renewable energy seems utopian, but upon closer examination, the viewers find problems that are darkly funny, alarmingly familiar, and even a shade dystopian. "Windtopia" challenges the audience to consider these questions in an entertaining experience that disguises serious activist concerns with art.
Chen’s presentation will be a mix of photography and graphic design and how they can stimulate discussion about serious social, political and artistic topics. This performance will be followed by a behind-the-scenes talk, in which Chen will detail the conceptual development of "Windtopia" – from the day it was inspired to what the future holds.
