The Hughes Family Tribute Center will present its eighth Día de los Muertos Celebración over two weeks. The cemetery, located in the Bachman Lake area, is traditionally visited by families on Día de los Muertos.
The Celebración builds on this tradition by presenting a two-week event featuring the art installation Los Espíritus del Bosque by artist Ricardo Alarcón; a visual art exhibition; Día de los Muertos: Sabiduría y Sentido; a live concert by the band Alebrije; dance performances by Grupo Pakal specializing in Mayan dance presentations; live mariachi music; family art activities, children’s entertainment; and food and beverage concessions.
Día de los Muertos: Sabiduría y Sentido will explore the heritage and cultural traditions of Día de los Muertos and share the important Mexican and Central American cultural heritage and its celebration of the indigenous traditions. The artistic goal is to build on the authentic tradition of families gathering in cemeteries to connect with their loved ones who are buried there and to increase public knowledge of the long history of the indigenous peoples among all of us today whether they be descendants of the Mayans, descendants of Mexican and Central American immigrants, recent immigrants, or descendants of other peoples around the world. History is written by the winners, but the stories of the "losers" of history have wisdom and meaning for all of us.
The art exhibition will feature the works of Ofelia Alvarenga, Juan Cruz, Kenya Diaz, Alex Genovez, Abel Leal, Jesus Meraz, Raul Najera, and Fred Villanueva.
