Tom Sale is known for his elaborate historical narratives such as 2014 Florence Project (about the life of Florence Nightingale). "Not Comets: A Biographical Account of the Early Years of Charles Messier, French Comet Hunter" is told mainly through photographs (with a few sculptures and objects).

Messier was an 18th century French astronomer whom the gallery visitor will discover had many secrets not told in today’s history books. Images hint at the science of photography being used decades before photography is known to be invented, and in Messier’s astral world, it is not only scientific instruments he used to detect heavenly objects. Sale also called on a few friends to help tell this story. A fabric sculpture by Amie Carson, nontraditional photography by Becky Ramotowski, historical avian photography by Dottie Love, and a whimsical series of photographs by Julia Schloss round out this story of stars and an unusual friendship.

Following the artist reception, the exhibit will be on view through February 28.
