In The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeosie, a simple gag stretched to absurd lengths plays out as an upper-class sextet tries to have a meal together. Director Luis Buñuel takes a simple idea and recreates it repeatedly in remarkably inventive and enjoyable ways. The excessive indulges of the French aristocrats provide ample fodder for Buñuel to model his film on excess and indulgence. An open-ended critique on everything unjust, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeosie is Buñuel’s most playful masterpiece and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The ArthouseFW - Buñuel Series emphasizes the Spanish director Luis Buñuel’s surreal criticism of society throughout his career. The selections highlight Buñuel’s stylistic coherence that has defined him as one of the most accomplished auteurs in cinematic history. The series will play at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth as part of an ongoing partnership with the Lone Star Film Society.
