Internationally-recognized baroque cellist Steuart Pincombe and his wife Michelle left professional careers in Europe for a chance to live in a 1959 19-foot travel trailer on a year long journey around North America. Their mission: to bring the high art of historically informed cello performance into the familiar spaces of cafes, coffee shops and brew pubs across the country in a way accessible to everyone. In February 2016, their trailer stops in Dallas, and Open Classical is proud to present Steuart as part of the Open Classical Artist Series.
Steuart will play a program entitled “Adaptation,” featuring virtuosic pieces from the earliest to latest music for solo cello without the endpin (1689-1875). Three different bow styles (baroque, transitional, and “modern”) will be used to sample works by Gabrielli, Bach, Duport, and Piatti. Their tour, dubbed Music in Familiar Spaces, has the aim of making high caliber classical music available to a wide and varied audience. Not only are performances in familiar, comfortable and untraditional spaces, but the audience is invited to experience the music in a new and engaging way, with an added focus on audience interaction and without rules of the traditional concert hall. Audience members are also asked to “name-their-own-ticket-price”, paying only what they can afford and what they believe the concert is worth.
In a unique melding of timeless art and fast-paced technology, Steuart’s recordings of the Bach cello suites will be available at the concert, but not on CD. Instead, the sound files have been loaded on custom USB drives for audience members to purchase and load onto their computers and mobile devices.
