With growing attention focused on their rich African American cultural legacy, Orchestra of New Spain celebrates its second year devoted to the Texas roots of Juneteenth with a range of classical music and song by Black composers.
To highlight the rich vocal tradition of the Black community, they will feature well-known soprano and versatile local chorus master Alfrelynn Roberts in a program of John Carter and Courtney Carey as well as two Spirituals, "I Wanna Be Ready" and "Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel."
Dallas composer Quinn Mason’s Petite Symphonie de Chambre Contemporaine (après Milhaud) honors French composer Darius Milhaud. Florence Price, a classical composer known also for her compositions of Spirituals, wrote Adoration as a short piece for church organ, whose rhythmic appeal has led to various arrangements for string orchestra.
French Latin sounds reverberate in La Bella Cubana, Afro Cuban Jose White’s 19th C ‘classical’ composition. His training at the Paris Conservatory led him to serve as court musician in Brazil and as violin teacher, performer, and composer in Paris.
