Orchestra of New Spain presents Cantatas & Tonadillas, featuring Nicholas Garza and Haley Sicking.
The Viennese had their symphonies, the Italians their operas, and the Spanish the street theater and the liturgy. While the King worshipped to the sounds of the Capilla Real, the people flocked to the public theaters for the major writers, and the half-time intermission of the tonadillas - intermezzos - for real entertainment.
The concert will feature a popular program of baroque works from Mexico by Manuel de Zumaya and from Spain by Francisco Courcelle, sung by exceptional Dallas specialists. Backdrop for the voices will be the orchestra, including Haydn as a symphonist preferred by the Spanish court. His Symphony 44 ‘Mourning’ evokes the losses in Ukraine, but it ends on a hopeful note.
