Orchestra of New Spain will present its fourth year devoted to the Texas roots of Juneteenth with a range of classical music and songs by Black composers. To highlight the rich vocal tradition of the Black community, they will feature celebrated soprano and versatile local chorus master Alfrelynn Roberts in a program of jazz-influenced arrangements of spirituals by composer John Carter, including his famous "Peter Go Ring Dem Bells," along with Prelude and Air Toccata.
Roberts will also sing in the Gospel Style developed by Robert L Morris, a composer, arranger and conductor who is known for preserving Black musical traditions through his choral works highlighting gospel and spiritual practices. Few Black musicians are able to embrace both the popular and academic world, however Grammy Award winner Cedric Dent, is professor of music at Tennessee State U and a 25 year member of the well-known gospel and jazz vocal sextet Take 6. Roberts will sing her "Soon One Morn."
